Vision and Mission

Akiyoshi Inasaka Laboratory is guided by the mission of “Exploring Future Happiness through Design Research.” Rather than treating happiness as a fixed psychological state or a single measurable index, the lab understands it as a process that is continuously constructed and updated through interactions among body, space, data, others, and environment.

Design Approach

Design always presents multiple right answers. The designer’s task is not to discover a singular truth, but to exercise judgment in selecting the optimal solution within given constraints. The optimal is never fixed; it is a hypothesis, continuously revised through changing contexts, temporalities, and relations.

Design is the discipline of continuous selection—a succession of judgments.

This position engages critically with both relativist approaches that abandon evaluative criteria and positivist frameworks that seek universal solutions. We propose a situated optimality instead: rigorous judgment exercised within specific conditions, open to revision as those conditions evolve.

Research Methodology

Research through Design (RtD)

Research through Design treats the act of designing as a process of knowledge generation. Making is not “presenting an answer” but “revealing which choices were made.” Design becomes a research inscription where the traces of judgment are made visible.

Through installations, interactive art, data-driven spaces, and provisional situations, we present and examine: why this expression was chosen, what alternatives existed, and how those choices affected affect and experience.

Data Visualization and Experimental Transformation

Data visualization in this laboratory is not a technique for making information legible. It is a spatial medium that supports thinking, judgment, and choice. Visualization simultaneously presents multiple candidate solutions, facilitating the selection of the next optimal.

We treat visualization (graphs, diagrams) and physicalization (sound, movement, scale) as a continuous process, reconstructing data as embodied experience.

Computer Vision Behavioral Analysis

How people pause, walk, gather, and disperse within a space reveals relationships between people and place that questionnaires and words alone cannot capture. Using computer vision, we extract positions, trajectories, postures, and bodily movements from video, describing behavior in space as it unfolds over time.

Our aim is not to reduce behavior to a single metric. By visualizing dwelling, circulation, interpersonal distance, and the traces of bodily movement, we interpret which spatial conditions give rise to which behaviors, and how those behaviors shape experience. These analyses become material for design judgment, supporting a cycle of making, observing, and remaking spaces and installations.
